“The essence of non-violent civil disobedience is to stand firm for what is right and springs from a deep sense of injustice. Opposing injustice means seeing that people have sufficient for their survival; seeing that the earth is carefully maintained; and seeing that non-violent behaviour continually transforms positively our human relations.”

Dr. Man Mohan Singh
Prime Minister
Government of India
South Block
Raisina Hills
New Delhi

Dear Sir:
We understand that in this hundredth anniversary year of satyagraha your Government has given attention to the historical practice of non-violence started by Mahatma Gandhi. As Europeans we appreciate that satyagraha continues to enrich the democratic fabric of your country.
We wanted to bring to your notice that 25,000 people are planning to march from Gwalior to Delhi this October and this is another such example of satyagraha and the strengthening of democratic rights. This is being carried out by Ekta Parishad and a constellation of grassroots organizations that have built a close association with many of us in different parts of Europe over the past decade. In light of the hundredth anniversary, we are eager to support their demands.
We were interested to learn that the demands are: a) to set up a National Land Authority to settle the long-term claims of many of the poor and landless; b) to ensure fast-track courts that will prevent people to hold onto land title because of the back-log in the court system; and c) to open a single window system of administrating land claims.
We humbly request you that you take seriously the economic, social and cultural rights of the landless, indigenous communities, women and other deprived people within this satyagraha and implore your Government to take the necessary action.

Thanking you in advance for your attention to this matter.

With sincerest regards,
Yours truly,

As human beings, our greatness lies not so much in being able to remake the world... as in being able to remake ourselves.
